A SHORT HISTORY OF THE

LEICESTERSHIRE REGIMENT

The Leicestershire Regiment began life as the 17th Regiment of Foot. The regiment saw action in the American War of Independence where after its performance in the battle of Princeton it gained the right to add an unbroken Laurel Wreath to its insignia.

In 1782 a Royal Warrant issued by George the third bestowed County titles on all the regiments of foot that had no special designation. The regiment became the 17th (Leicestershire) Regiment of Foot. The regiment served in India from 1804 to 1823. In recognition of this long service King George 1V gave permission for the regiment to carry the Royal Tiger with the word Hindoostan on their colours. After this award the Leicester's were always proudly called "The Tigers". The regiment went on to serve in the 1st Afghan War and the Crimean War.

In 1881 under the Childers reforms the regiment became The Leicestershire Regiment with its base at Glen Parva. The Leicester's went on to serve in the 2nd Boer War and served in France, Flanders, Mesopotamia and Palestine during the Great War. During the Great War the Leicester's lost over 7,000 men. The Second World War cost the regiment a further 1,400 dead serving in Burma, Greece, Northern Europe, Italy, North Africa & Norway.

1946 brought the granting of Royal status to the regiment and in 1951 more action in the Korean War. In 1952 the regiment was granted the freedom of the City of Leicester before once again going off to the likes of Germany, Sudan, Cyprus, Brunei and Aden.

The end of the regiment came in 1964 when it was absorbed into the Royal Anglian regiment, which brought the curtain down on over 200 years of service.
